BOONE, Iowa— Rail Explorers, featuring pedal-assisted railbikes, announced today the launch of the Rail Explorers: Boone IA Division at the Boone & Scenic Valley Railroad on July 21, 2022. This will be the first location in the Midwest and the fifth location in the Rail Explorers portfolio.Way out in Boone, Iowa, there stands an impossibly tall railroad bridge that crosses the Des Moines River. For years, this was one of the highest and longest railroad bridges in the world. It stands 185 feet tall and 2,685 feet long. The bridge was completed in 1901 and carried railcars across the river until it was abandoned in 2009.Boone is still served by the mainline of the Union Pacific Railroad, which purchased the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad (C&NW) in 1995. Pufferbilly Days , an annual event celebrating Boone’s railroad heritage, is held in August and is one of Iowa’s top five community festivals with over 30,000 attendees.The new bridge sails over the Union Pacific Railroad tracks that run along 210th Street.
