The Steel Path is unrelated to the base part of the game. It's an extra, or a bonus level if you will. No future content will be locked behind it and it was never intended to be the new endgame mode. You can find what their intentions were with the Steel Path from here. All the rewards there are there for the purpose of flexing cosmetics.
