It will shift but you really have to jam it into gear. I have adjusted the clutch bolt on the front of the motor a couple times and it makes no difference.Remember there's two different models of the 420 Rancher. The foot shift or ES model holds 2.8 liters and the auto tranny model holds 3.6 liters. Most 4-wheeler problems are caused by a loose nut connecting the handlebars and the seat!! How to replace shift-shaft in rancher 420es. I bought this 2008 rancher last year with only about 300 miles in it. It never shifted right. I replaced the angle sensor and battery, but didn't help. I cleaned the shifter motor brushes as well. I think I finally found the problem- there is play on the spline of the shift shaft.
